2022 TipTop 25
Week Seven
Welcome
back to the college football ranking system that began with a preseason top 25
that
was based solely on picking teams at random out of a hat, as shown
above. You can see that Arkansas was selected first, thereby
securing our
preseason #1 slot. Sadly for the Razorbacks, they were unimpressive
enough
in their opener that they fell out of the top slot immediately, and by
now they have fallen to the bottom of the TipTop 25, and are lucky to be ranked that highly.
As the games are played, I will be ranking teams
completely
blind to their histories and "name" value, so that they are ranked
entirely based on what they do this season and, for the first half of the season
at least, on
where they were ranked in the preseason (as well as where their opponents
were ranked in the preseason). Eventually, where teams were
ranked in the preseason should have little or no impact on their
current rankings.
All unranked FBS teams are treated the same here, but
this ranking assumes that all FCS teams are at a lower power level, and
therefore it
is unacceptable for a ranked FBS team to struggle with an FCS team, let
alone lose. Similarly, beating an FCS team, regardless of how
"impressive" the score, means nothing and is treated the same as though
the winner did not play a game at all.

Notes
on Changes to This Week's TipTop 25
Georgia and UCLA
have performed pretty much the same thus far, but we're moving Georgia
ahead of UCLA this week just because Georgia had been rated #27 in the
preseason, UCLA #38.
South Alabama was passed up by a few teams this week due to struggling to beat unrated Louisiana-Monroe by 7 points at home.
On a similar note, Liberty, who had been ranked #19 last week,
edged Gardner-Webb by just 1 point this week, a simply dreadful
performance that sends Liberty all the way out of the rankings.
5-2 Kentucky's 27-17 win over Mississippi State, who had been ranked
#24 last week, brings the Wildcats back into the top 25, and a couple
of teams follow on their coat tails. 4-3 Florida comes in first, as all
of their losses have come to now-rated teams (one being Kentucky), and
they have a big win over 5-2 Utah, the other coat-tail-rider. Utah just
beat Southern Cal, who had been ranked #11 last week (the Trojans are
now sitting just outside the top 25, at #26, as covered below), and the
Utes had also been ranked #15 in the preseason rankings.
Enough teams have now taken "upset" losses (such as #20 Kentucky,
who has taken a loss to unranked South Carolina) that 4-3 Arkansas, our
preseason #1 team, is back in the top 25 despite a loss to unranked
Texas A&M. They have a big win over 5-1 Cincinnati, who comes back
into our TipTop 25 in its last slot.
